October Recap
We had a busy month in October which started with a visit from the Jefferson Firefighters. The children learned fire safety and got to climb aboard a firetruck. We enjoyed all of the visits from the grandparents. The kids were so excited to see their special people come and visit them in their classrooms. We had a great turnout at back to school night. It was a great opportunity for parents to learn a little more about what is going on in the classroom each day, as well as, getting to meet other parents from their child's classroom.
Mr. Chris started up his music classes in October. He is here every other Wednesday. Remember if your child is not scheduled to attend school on Wednesday mornings you may still come in for the music class. Just let Mrs. Dugan know ahead of time that you are coming.
Miss Chris, the Jefferson librarian started coming again to Alpine. She reads twice a month to the kindergarteners. She is having a competition between the other kindergarten classes that she reads to in town. When you visit the library you have to tell the librarian at the desk what school you are from. The kindergarten class with the most library visits will win an ice cream party and backpacks.
November Events
November started with a very unwelcomed visitor - Sandy. At the time of writing this newsletter we are still without power. We are very hopefull that it will be restored over the weekend (11/3-11/4) and we will be able to be back to school the first full week of November. The schedule listed below will be made under that assumption. However, if we do not have power by 11/5 we will need to adjust the dates on the schedule below and that will be communicated via email.
Halloween Celebration
TBD - we still would like to have a Halloween celebration once everyone has power and is back at school. Staff will determine new plans and let you know.
11/5-11/9 Parent observations - please sign up with your child's teacher
11/10 Parent/Teacher conferences
11/14 Jammin for Juniors
11/21 Thanksgiving Feast - we will be providing turkey sandwiches, if you would like to provide a snack or volunteer to help (we could use a couple per class) please see your teacher to sign up. All children are welcome.
11/22-11/23 Thanksgiving - no school
Service Projects
We will have two service projects this year.
In November we will collect food for the food pantry. One of the churches in town will be making 50 baskets for Thanksgiving. They have asked us to help with some of the supplies. They are looking for the following: cans of fruit cocktail, box of instant mashed potatoes, box or bag stuffing, apple juice, tea bags and Thanksgiving or holiday napkins. We will have a box on each floor to collect the food. Please bring in items before November 12th.
In December we will be collecting toys for Tilley's Kids. Tilley's Kids, a non-profit organization located in Newark, NJ that collects holiday gifts for students at two elementary schools in Newark. Both schools are designated as 100% free lunch schools, which mean that all the children in these schools live below standard poverty levels. This year the numbers of children has increased. More children are in need of toys, gloves and hats etc. this holiday season than ever before. So we asking for your help to make this season even more special for these children. Please know that these toys go directly to the children. A box will be placed in the lobby from November 19th-30th. We are asked to collect toys for younger children such as Matchboxes (sets of 6), Tonka trucks, Matchbox car carriers (can be found at Target), baby dolls, matching games, card games for younger children, books, art sets etc. No wrapping necessary. One of our parents, Mrs. Garagliano, will personally deliver these toys to the Newark schools. The gift that is donated through our efforts may be the only holiday gift these children will receive this year. Thank you in advance for help with either of these service projects.
